His Story & Legacy
Thorington “Don” Reasor saw a world worth painting. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he was a self taught artist whose natural gift grew into a lifelong devotion. He understood that gift as a blessing from God, and used it to tell stories of faith, family and the richness of Black life.
From Southern communities to the energy of Paradise Valley, Don painted the people, places and achievements that gave his culture its character. His paintings celebrate church life, thriving businesses, community gatherings and the joy of everyday life. Alongside the challenges of history, he shows the accomplishments and triumphs that continue to inspire generations.
Paradise Valley reveals just how deeply he felt those stories. His wife remembers tears running down his face as he painted its extraordinary detail. As he painted, he remembered growing up and living among the people and places on his canvas, and the loss of a community he knew as highway construction and raids changed it forever. His painting honors the life, pride and accomplishments that remain an enduring part of Detroit history.
His relationship with God shaped both his life and his art. Faith guided the way he lived and shines through works such as Who Touched Me, reflecting the belief in God that sustained him throughout his life.
At home, nothing mattered more than family. Don was honest and direct, with a generous heart and a deep love for his culture. His work invites each viewer to bring their own experience and discover their own meaning.
He took his craft seriously. Every stroke and color had to feel right. In his later years, he explored different brushstrokes and ways of painting, always curious about what he could create and how he could continue to develop his gift.
